About Cancun, Downtown

The name Cancún has become synonymous with having fun under the sun. This resort town is a symbol for all the attractions of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, with hotels and restaurants sitting alongside beautiful beaches. There is another side to Cancún, however, beyond the planned hotel area. The bustling city center has its own attractions, and your trip can focus on these sights and sounds as part of your visit to Cancún.

See the City

The beaches, restaurants and clubs in downtown Cancún feel less planned than those near the hotels and can offer a better immersion in local culture and traditions. Going out for dinner and dancing in the bustling heart of Cancún is a new kind of adventure, even for people intimately familiar with the white-sand beaches and tourist-friendly restaurants in the hotel area.

If you want to spend a few hours shopping for bargains and unique local handicrafts, Mercado 28 is your top destination. Prices here are lower than in the hotel area, and the colorful flea-market atmosphere is its own kind of attraction. Arts and crafts items are available in the nearby Plaza Bonita, which is easily recognizable due to its throwback village decor. For a more modern shopping experience downtown, you can stop into the bustling Plaza Las Americas, which has over 50 stores.

When it’s time for dinner in downtown Cancún, you can stroll down Avenida Tulum or Calle Yaxchilan to sample the local delicacies. You may find the atmosphere is more distinctive at the eateries in the city center than in the hotel area – and they’re less expensive, too.

Enjoy the Region

Some of the most amazing sights around Cancún aren’t in town or on the beaches; they’re under the water. The Museo Subacuático de Arte is a submerged collection of sculptures in the waters between Cancún, Punta Nizuc and the Isla Mujeres. More than 500 pieces of art sit in these clear Caribbean waters, and visitors can see them while taking a glass-bottomed boat or diving.

Nichupté, a lagoon system located near Cancún, offers a unique setting to get in touch with nature. Whether you’re admiring the amazing sunsets or participating in a mangrove conservation effort, you can see the Yucatan Peninsula’s unique jungle atmosphere up close.

If you’re curious about the history of the region, you can get a close-up view of Mayan ruins at El Rey archeological zone or El Templo del Alacrán, the temple of the scorpion. Though thousands of years have passed, Mayan civilization still has a strong cultural presence in Quintana Roo state.

In or around Cancún, the opportunities for discovery never end.
