Acerca de San Martín

There's a lot to discover on the Caribbean island containing the former Dutch colony called St. Maarten and the ex-French possession known as St. Martin. The two countries, each taking up part of the small gem of land, spent late 2017 reopening for foreign visitors after a strike from Hurricane Irma. Now, with the governments of each nation working more closely than ever, you can discover the diverse and numerous attractions spread across this tropical paradise.

See the South Side

When you arrive on the island through Princess Juliana Airport, you're in the midst of the Dutch half, Sint Maarten. This nation is autonomous but is still considered part of the Dutch Kingdom. Walking the streets of the capital city of Philipsburg, you may notice the brightly colored and distinctive architecture. While shopping in the city, you'll notice it is located in a duty-free zone, promising enticing prices.

To learn the history of city and island, the Sint Maarten Museum and National Heritage Foundation will provide a fascinating day of browsing. The unique conjoined history of the two countries on the island is worth discovering. If you'd rather spend time out in nature than exploring a museum, there is Sint Maarten Park, home to a zoo and botanical park with over 80 types of creatures.

After a day spent at the beach, nature park, shops, museums or historical attractions, you can stroll along the waterfront promenade and enjoy the busy nightlife.

Explore the North Side

No matter which side of the island you arrive through, you can pass easily into the other, with no need to stop at a border. This porous boundary, coming with free movement of goods and people, has been enshrined in local law since 1648. Passing into the French half, known as Saint-Martin, you may find yourself drawn to the capital city of Marigot. The bustling market therein is a perfect place to buy local goods and lose yourself in Creole culture.

Art lovers will find exciting ways to spend their days on the French half of the island, including a trip to the Roland Richardson Gallery Museum. Not only does this museum contain beloved works of the impressionist painter, the building itself is a work of art. The structure initially opened in 1846 and serves as a view into historic French Creole architecture.

However you split your time between the cooperative halves of this Caribbean hideaway, St. Maarten and St. Martin will welcome you.
